PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

Braking Distance

When you're falling through the air, velocity isn't the issue; nor (necessarily) is the firmness of the ground. It's the rate at which we come to a halt that causes the problems. As Mercury moves from mile-a-minute Aries to stately Taurus, it immediately jams on the brakes for an encounter with Saturn tomorrow. So, should we fear coming back to earth with a painful bump? Actually it's an opportunity to pause and take stock. A considered approach will avoid painful collisions.

Fail Better

'Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better'. These words, by Samuel Beckett have become a modern day mantra for start-up companies, athletes and anyone trying to overcome difficulty. Stubbornness can be useful. Rigidity isn't always undesirable. If it weren't for persistence the world would be a poorer place. In these challenging days, we must think responsibly about how to apply ourselves; but if we work smart now, we can achieve much in the face of adversity.

Imagine

We're experiencing a rare, historic moment when almost all human beings want similar things: the removal of the constraints that prevent us from doing what we want and need to do. As we head towards Saturn's turn retrograde, some rules will gradually be relaxed. In the meantime, it's important to find creative ways to satisfy our desires. Mercury's link to Venus fuels the imagination. The ideas we generate now, and the plans we make, could prove to be invaluable in the times ahead.

Testing Times

Hi Oscar,
Even before lockdown, life felt stuck and not very blessed. Will I ever feel brighter and more hopeful, with positive expectations? Belinda (Capricorn)

Hi Belinda, Even though Saturn's your ruling planet, its sojourn in any sign is challenging. It's in Aquarius now, but will turn retrograde in May, and head back into Capricorn. Although it will test you, it brings resilience and the fortitude to succeed. When we're prepared to learn from a process, we'll be stronger for it; and that means progress. Yours, Oscar

A Change of Perspective

'If at first you don't succeed, try, try again' wrote educator Thomas H. Palmer. Yet Einstein defined insanity as 'doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results'. So which maxim should we follow? This week we've talked about 'trying'. Just because we're not ready to give up on our goals doesn't mean we have to keep approaching challenges in the same way. As Mercury links with Uranus it's time for a change of perspective, and a recharge of our batteries and ambitions.

Your May Monthly Horoscope

If hearts were athletes, they would be rowers; because as hard as they strive they can't quite see where they're going to end up. In these uncertain times, even though it feels as if we're moving backwards, we're making progress. In May, hard-working Saturn, trusting Jupiter and love-struck Venus join Pluto in retrograde motion across the skies. But we're not moving in the wrong direction. In fact, we're clearing up confusion and discovering and dealing with what's kept us from forging ahead.
