PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
May 14th to May 20th 2007

MONDAY May 14
Previous existences

Hello Jonathan!
Can astrology reveal who you were in a previous existence?
Gina

Dear Gina,
When senior Tibetan Buddhists die, the monks assess recently born infants till they find the 'reincarnation.' They use several criteria, some of which are astrological. In other cultures, too, astrology is used to define who you once were. I fear, though, that re-incarnation often becomes an excuse ('I'm paying for something I did') or a distraction ('My last life was full, so it's OK if this one is empty'). I am only really interested in astrology as a way to make THIS life better.

TUESDAY May 15
New Moon time

Horror films often begin with a shot of a Full Moon. Paintings of witches or haunted houses also use this obvious image. Everyone knows that spooky things happen when there’s a big bright orb, shining in the sky. Everyone, that is, apart from astrologers. Experience teaches us that, though Full Moons stir up emotions, New Moons make us more receptive and responsive, artistic and creative, sensitive and psychic. On moonless nights like tonight, people are especially prone to see visions and apparitions. This is rarely depicted, though, because an absence is always much harder to demonstrate than a presence!

WEDNESDAY May 16
"Superstition ain't the way"

Dear Jonathan,
I have heard that it is bad luck to re-read old horoscopes. Is this true?
David

Dear David,
No. It is, though, surely bad luck to worry about whether something is bad luck! What, once, we called superstition, we today call obsessive/compulsive behaviour. There’s a lot of it about. All over the world, people seemingly love to invent intolerant deities and imbue them with pernickety preferences. The gods themselves, though, are surely far too high and enlightened to care where we put our new shoes, which ladders we walk under or how many mirrors we break.

THURSDAY May 17
Global Peace Meditation Day

Dear Jonathan,
Did you know that Sunday is Global Peace Meditation Day? There are going to be gatherings all over the world and we are all being asked to meditate. Apparently this will create a shift in world consciousness. Scientists have set up computers to monitor the effect internationally. Is it a good day for all this astrologically?
Cindy

Dear Cindy, I'm sure that any day is a good day for a moment of quiet meditation.I can't help but wonder though, whether those scientists might be better off looking for peace in their hearts, rather than in their computers!

FRIDAY May 18
A grown-up question

Dear Jonathan,
Can the stars tell me what my passions and interests are? I'm 44 and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.
Sheila

Dear Sheila,
Talents and areas of fascination are usually quite easy to identify in a full date-and-time-of-birth chart. Just because we’re good at one thing though, doesn’t mean we can’t learn to be good at a hundred more. Arguably, people like you who are willing to allow themselves the freedom to chop, change and experiment are very wise and mature. There’s nothing ‘grown up’ about only having narrow aspirations.

SATURDAY May 19
Mercury, the Moon and Saturn

In theory, it becomes a little easier to see Mercury this week - low in the west, shortly after sunset. In practice? Well, even experienced stargazers find Mercury hard to spot. That's one reason why the ancients associated this planet with trickery. Watch out, also, for the Moon on Tuesday, briefly moving right in front of Saturn. Saturn represents structure and strategy, law and order, restraint, limitation and 'the status quo'. The Moon symbolises impulsive emotion and deep compassion - the ultimate power of the heart over the head. In political terms Saturn is 'the establishment', the Moon is 'the will of the public'. As the Moon now effectively wipes out Saturn, it is easy to see which influence is symbolically destined for victory.
