MONDAY FEBRUARY 10 Iraq song Our leaders are now busily telling us why we need to act like swaggering bullies in the Middle East. This week though, I want to discuss some of the reasons why this might not be such a great idea. I may also quote a little more from the following song which came to me by email from someone called John Robbins. It needs to be sung to the tune of “If You’re Happy And You Know It” and there are several verses of which my favourite goes... “If you cannot find Osama, bomb Iraq. If the markets are a drama, bomb Iraq. If the terrorists are frisky, Pakistan is looking shifty, North Korea is too risky, Bomb Iraq.” TUESDAY FEBRUARY 11 Conflict in Iraq prediction As conflict in Iraq grows ever nearer, I would like to reiterate some of the predictions I made last year. The war will not suddenly spread to other lands. It will though, prove much more complicated, difficult, expensive and resource-consuming than many expect. It may not quite prove to be “another Vietnam” but it will certainly stimulate a worldwide protest movement that matches the famous anti-Vietnam war campaign of the sixties. This year’s really big battle is going to be between those who believe that progress can be accomplished only through violence – and those who want to make the world a higher, wiser, kinder place. In the end, the voices of reason will prevail. WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 12 Michael Jackson I would very much like to believe that Michael Jackson’s interest in children is perfectly innocent. But even if that’s so, it sets a dangerous precedent. It allows other people, whose intentions are not so pure, to claim that they are merely “doing a Michael Jackson’. And er... speaking of dangerous presidents, what message is George Bush sending out at the moment? Some people might think he was saying “If you are in ever conflict with someone, the best thing to do is threaten them with violence.” Er... wouldn’t it be much more responsible of this great world leader to show us all how much can be achieved through NON-violence? THURSDAY FEBRUARY 13 Jupiter's opposition to Neptune The state of the world is now very clearly reflected by the state of the sky. Jupiter’s opposition to Neptune speaks of romantic idealism. It describes the bubble of fantasy that we are all now trying to put around ourselves as we prepare for Valentine’s Day. Mars and Pluto, though, describe the mood of tension that refuses to go away – and that we keep hearing ever more about in the news. Wouldn’t it be nice be if Cupid could, somehow, work a little magic on Mr Bush and Mr Hussein. FRIDAY FEBRUARY 14 Anti-war march “Dad,” said two of my kids yesterday, “Last time we went on an anti-war march, there were hundreds of thousands of people but the TV news reports made it sound like far less.” I tried to reassure them. “This time, kids, the Daily Mirror (a newspaper in the United Kingdom) is not just watching the March, it is joining in. They’ll make sure the truth is told. “But Dad...” they continued, “What if there is a terrorist attack - or a load of trouble on the March?” “There won’t be.” I replied. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow. Meanwhile Happy Valentine’s Day!
