PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
November 27th to December 1st

MONDAY NOVEMBER 27
Global warming warning

Last week, a group of international politicians got together to talk about global warming. They talked and they talked and then, they talked some more. All that they actually created though, was a load of hot air! What a surprise. Imagine though, how much worse it would have been if they had managed to do a deal. This would have lulled us all into a false sense of security. The world is under urgent, immediate threat from pollution. You can't solve a problem this big by playing about with a few statistics. We ALL have to sit up, take notice - and then take action. Very soon, I predict, we will!

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 28
Global warming repeat warning

"Dear Jonathan, you often write about global warming. Sometimes, you are re-assuring and you predict that the world will mend its ways in time to stop a major disaster from taking place. Yet you also seem to be deeply worried. So, are we going to be OK or aren't we?" "Dear all who have asked me such a question. Please imagine that you are climbing a mountain. You feel sure that you can safely reach the top - as long as everyone in your team remains alert. This though, only makes you more keen to keep pointing out the danger."

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 29
Open-minds

I have been thinking a lot, lately, about morality. It seems to me that we live in a hypocritical world, full of people who are too quick to pass judgement on one another. I include myself here. I have noticed a tendency to make big assumptions and reach extreme conclusions about what (and who) I approve of. This neatly avoids the uncomfortable, inconvenient need to consider shades of grey. The older I get, the more I suspect that many of my strongest opinions are based on ignorance and prejudice. It strikes me that an open mind is probably the highest goal that a human being can aspire to.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 30
Judgement

Yesterday, I suggested that most people are far too quick to judge one another. This of course, is a judgement in itself. It is not though, a hasty one. I have reached this conclusion over decades of careful observation and remain willing to hear the reason why it could be wrong. We can't of course, get through life without using our judgement. It is essential that we develop, trust and follow it. But it strikes me that a good trick, if you can manage it, is to recognise the ultimate uncertainty of everything... whilst being as certain as possible about most things!

FRIDAY DECEMBER 1
Romantic aspirations

This month should be good for all who have romantic aspirations. Shortly after the Full Moon on December 11, we get a conjunction of Venus and Neptune. That bodes well for anyone who has a far-fetched dream. Jupiter's influence, at this time, adds electricity to the atmosphere - as does the meeting of Pluto and Mercury. Whenever these planets align, important secrets come to light. Though the climate then turns tense for a few days, it softens in time for an eclipse of the sun on Christmas Day. The festive season for most of us, this year, should be surprisingly meaningful - and enjoyable.
